The Power Of Scale – Promotional material for a RIBA event presenting the effect architecture has on mental health

PROJECT PROMOTIONAL DESIGN MODULE

ROLE UNDERSTANDING EVENT CONCEPT, DESIGNING WITH USERS IN MIND

DATE 2019

The context

RIBA were recently looking to promote an event which desired to explore the relationship between architecture, space and mental health. In order to convey this through type and imagery I decided to utilise Swiss style typography, abstract shapes and white space. By presenting space and type in its most simplest forms I could bring out the feelings surrounding how space effects people in their daily lives.

I used two typefaces to discern event info. + decorative copy

I needed to balance eye-catching design with legible and clear copy in order to get users to the finish line of signing up to the event. To do this I used Basic Sans for important information and Euclid Circular for decorative type. The accompanying colours of pink and purple made this typography pop but also related to softer colours surrounding mental health.

It was important to understand how users would interact with the promotional material on the day

Once users were at the finish line of being at the event, the leaflet would need to be informative but also inviting. Techniques such as foldouts and scattered headings were used to give users a more tactile and sensory experience, making them more likely to turn each page. My lecturer, after viewing this work, told me that ‘this was when he realised I had grown in ability as a designer.’
